Mr Z

"Mr. Z Of The Three Jewels Of The Illinois River"
Z carvers as described by Joe French in 1968 ,"as one of three Jewels Of The Illinois River from the 1890's." "Z" carvers are still unknown but the style is that of a thin hollow bird with great balance, symmetry, and very smooth lines, similar in that respect to the later work of Charles Perdew. Some think that Mr. "Z" as shown on plate 413 in Parmalee is the early work of Elliston. Because they came out of the same area as the Mr. "X" decoys, they may have been the work of Dell Woods and/or George W. Cunningham, care takers of the Hennepin Shooting Club where George Sibley was a member. As suggested by Donna Tonelli in Decoy Magazine(July/August '91), Woods and Cunningham likely had a lot of input in the design of the Sibley Factory decoys. They were professional Market Gunners when Sibley was a Chicago businessman and sportsman. Great form and very collectible!

Mr. Z Bluebill

Mr. Z., 1 of 3 Jewels of the Illinois River MW 6
The so called "Z" carvers are still of unknown origin, but the style is that of a thin hollow decoy with balance, symmetry, and very smooth balanced lines. It is similar to the later work of Charles Perdew. Some think that the Mr. "Z" as shown on plate 413 in Parmalee is the early work of Ellison. It is also possible due to the area they came from, that the work could be possibly attributed to either Dell Woods and/or George W. Cunningham, car stakers of the Hennepin Shooting Club where George Sibley was a member. As suggested by Donna Tonelli in Decoy Magazine (July/August'91), Woods and Cunningham likely had a lot of input in the design of the Sibley Factory decoys. They were professionals in the duck hunting business while Sibley was a Chicago businessman and sportsman.

1/2 Size Cork Decoy Attributed To Walter Ruppel

Walter Ruppel Attributed,Sheboygon,Wisconsin
Half size cork black duck decoy attributed to Walter Ruppel of Sheboygon, Wisconsin.Working decoy is original condition as well as paint. Retains the original glass eyes as well as the bottom board. Head is connected with a dowel and swivels slightly, but is not loose! The head carving is very well done in fine detail and the cork has been shaved on both sides of the back to depict feathers as well as a line that runs from the back of the neck to the tail. Also, the same technique has been applied just forward of both shoulders to clearly outline the breast area. This is believed to be a trait that Ruppel used in his early work on a limited basis that he went away from in his later works due to time contraints. Limited examples of this early technique exist!
