Dick Janson Drake Mallard

Fresh Air Dick Janson,Sonoma Creek,CA.
Outstanding example in original paint of this carvers skill which has the Janson Skag. This decoy is in structurally near mint condition with a leather strap as well as a lead weight on the bottom. This working decoy has a very small rub to the top of the bill,a small chip to the rear of the skag on the bottom as well as a small amount of hunter touch-up to the white paint around the neck. Several typical in-use rubs to the paint exist especially along the tip points of the tail. Very fine example of this carvers work as well as a great addition to any West Coast or Mallard collection.

Pair Of Wood Duck Palm Frond Decoys

Jim Frasher,Sacramento Valley,CA.
Pair of extremly rare Wood Duck Palm Frond decoys in original paint as well as condition. Some limited touch-up to the paint on the neck of the Drake and Hen. Used as working decoys at the Sacramento Delta Hunting Club Ca.late 40's with the initials JE on the bottom. Material is very unusual and is considered a depression era inexpensive and easy to find wood in the California region. The wood comes off the tree only at it's base and mother nature has formed it into the shape of a Pintail equipped with an already formed keel. That is why most Palm Frond decoys found are Pintail, Mallard, Canada and Snow Geese. A reference to Palm Frond Decoys may be found by reading Lew Clingan"s "Guide to Palm Frond Old Decoys". This is a rare find!

Pair of Palm Frond Pintails

Joe Bushalaacchi,Stockton,CA.
Muskrats like to chew on them and they were esily waterlogged even over time with the use of Linseed oil, paint and the eventual development of Palm Frond stick-up decoys. They are a very important part of the history of decoy carving however, brought to the decoy collecting world from the West Coast, especially California. The most common Palm Frond decoys were Pintails because mother nature shaped the wood with a keel already in the basic configuration of a Pintail. So, this limited the carving time to final paint. For a reference see Lew Clingan "Palm Frond Decoys Old Decoys Collectors Guide". Both these decoys are extra interesting because they have canvas heads. The drake has a little cracked paint on the belly and the Hen has a small amount of well worn paint on the right side. They both also have STKN Bushalacks and the initials JB initialed on the bottom.

Palm Frond Drake Pintail

Art Fitzer,Galt,CA.
Palm Frond Decoys were very specific to the depression era and beyond and they were produced mostly on the west coast. The most common species produced were Pintails, Mallards,Canada as well as Snow Geese. Nature equipped the wood with a natural keel and as such the Pintail was easy to produce as the shape was almost pre-formed in the wood. Initially they floated high and dry, but easily became waterlogged. Linseed Oil and paint were often used as in this case to act as sealers. This is a really fine example of a Palm Frond working decoy in original paint, condition and outstanding form!
